The Lynx CMOS imaging sensor provides full SXGA resolution at 100 frames per second, with < 4e- read-out noise and without cooling. This fully solid-state CMOS sensor provides excellent imaging across varying light conditions, from daylight to low-light levels - such as those found during a quarter-moon. The Lynx CMOS imaging sensor is the rst operational sensor specically designed with Night Vision, Homeland Security and Surveillance applications in mind. The main modification required to deploy this system in new situations will be in locating or providing a fixed or static background against which animals can be observed and in using masking techniques within motion-detection software.XL Technical Specifications ϳϬй 4XDQWXP (IILFLHQF\ YƵĂŶƚƵŵ ĨĨŝĐŝĞŶĐLJ ;йͿ ϲϬй Camera ϱϬй Specications Resolution 1280 × 1024 Pixels ϰϬй Pixel Pitch 9.7 μm × 9.7 μm ϯϬй Well Capacity Dynamic Range ϮϬй Read Noise > 25000 e> 60 dB 60% at peak > 60% at peak Frame Rate Up to 100 Hz with full eld resolution Image Lag < 0.1% Shutter Mode ϭϭϬϬ Rolling Features Imaging Startup Time Image Correction Gain Control High Dynamic Range Digital Zoom Contrast Enhancement < 5 sec Bad pixel replacement and non-uniformity correction (NUC) Automatic (AGC), manual Two knee points Up to 4X Histogram stretching, Histogram equalization Housing Lens Mount Dimensions (excluding connectors) (Width × Height × Depth) Weight CS-mount 34.1× 36.6 × 37.4 mm 85 g Input/Output Digital Video Output 10-bit CameraLink® Compatible Analog Video Output NTSC/PAL Communications Serial via CameraLink® Compatible or USB Synchronization Analog output strobe reference Environmental and Power Operating Temperature Storage Temperature Input Voltage Power -40☌ to 60☌ -50☌ to 80☌ USB or 5 to 15 VDC < 1.8 W (typical) Mechanical Dimensions for XL Camera Body (in mm) NOCTURN XL Camera is powered by the Lynx CMOS imaging sensor, optimized for low light level imaging. The low cost and high signal-to-noise ratio of this system may make it easy to adapt for other small animal applications.Commercial camera traps placed at the sites failed to capture many of these events. The Nocturn XL is a ruggedized passive low-light camera module that features high-definition, high sensitivity and high dynamic range with low power consumption. The Nocturn XL Camera is powered by the Lynx CMOS imaging sensor, optimised for low light level imaging. Data collected had a high signal-to-noise ratio of 2,182 capture events 55% documented Glaucomys, 40% documented non-target mammals, 1% were caused by large insects and the remaining 4% were unknown. The Nocturn XL camera core has an integrated interface board that can be used to output digital video over a Camera Link compatible interface as well as NTSC/PAL composite video. The traps showed low latency, with an average of <1 night until detection of Glaucomys at each site. Four pi cameras successfully documented visits by Glaucomys and other animals to bait placed on the platform over three nights at four wooded sites: suburban and rural backyards, a private outdoors club and a small urban nature reserve (16 camera X site combinations, 48 trap nights). Over the last 10 years or so, the lowlight ability of modern digital cameras has made it possible to photograph animals in darkness in ways that were not.We compared the performance of our system to commercial trailcams. The system was built from commercially available parts and was comparable in cost to a consumer camera trap, although this cost did not include a waterproof housing. ![]() As part of a study of flying squirrels ( Glaucomys) in urban environments we developed motion-detecting camera traps using a raspberry pi microcomputer and camera and a 940 nm IR illuminator on a tree-mounted wooden platform.Motion-detection techniques have advantages over time-lapse and heat-triggered traps, but need to be deployed to maximize signal-to-noise ratio. ![]() ![]()
